The Bird Box - Fully Accessible Tree House - Private Air BnB - Rural Suffolk
Location - Laxfield, Suffolk
Date - 2023-2024
Type - Private
GIA - 61 m2
Nestled in a quiet corner of a working field in East Suffolk—just a stone’s throw from the coast—this site is surrounded by rich flora, fauna, and reflective ponds that capture the changing light of day.
A growing collection of handcrafted shelters is taking shape here as unique Airbnb stays. A ‘Water Shack’ extends over a peaceful glade, and a Shepherd’s Hut sits tucked within its own natural setting.
The latest addition, now under construction, is the Bird Box—a fully accessible ‘tree house’ designed to sit within a carefully chosen cluster of trees. Unlike typical accessible accommodation, every part of the structure—from ground level to the canopy—will be seamlessly designed for wheelchair users, without visible lifts or bolt-ons. Accessibility is fully integrated into the architecture.
Built with sustainable materials and a circular approach, the Bird Box is designed for potential disassembly and reuse. Rainwater harvesting and integrated solar panels will create a self-sufficient energy system for heating, cooling, and comfort.
Client John Archer—a craftsman and entrepreneur—brings deep knowledge of the Suffolk landscape, which is reflected in the character and quality of the site.
Now on site, the Bird Box is set for completion in Spring 2025.
